Seventh Crusade

Also known as First Crusade of Louis IX

Crusades 1248–1254
Seventh Crusade

Louis IX's Egypt campaign after the loss of Jerusalem in 1244, ending in defeat and royal captivity but followed by years of rebuilding work in Acre and the coastal kingdom.

The Seventh Crusade was Louis IX of France's answer to the final loss of Jerusalem in 1244 and the disaster at La Forbie. Like the Fifth Crusade, it targeted Egypt as the key to recovering the Holy Land. Louis captured Damietta in 1249 and advanced inland toward Cairo.

The campaign collapsed at al-Mansurah and Fariskur in 1250. Louis was captured and ransomed, and Damietta was returned. Unlike many defeated crusaders, he remained in the east until 1254, spending enormous sums refortifying Acre, Caesarea, Jaffa, and Sidon and trying to stabilise the coastal kingdom after its military elite had been shattered.
