Norwegian Crusade

Also known as Sigurd Jorsalfar's Crusade

Crusades 1107–1111
Norwegian Crusade

The naval expedition of King Sigurd I of Norway, the first European king to personally reach the Holy Land on crusade.

The Norwegian Crusade was led by King Sigurd I, later called Jorsalfar, or 'Jerusalem-farer'. Sailing from Scandinavia through the Atlantic and Mediterranean, Sigurd fought along the Iberian coast and in the Balearics before reaching the eastern Mediterranean.

In the Holy Land he visited Jerusalem, met King Baldwin I, and joined the Franks in operations against the coastal city of Sidon. Its capture in 1110 strengthened the Kingdom of Jerusalem's hold on the Levantine coast and made the Norwegian expedition one of the earliest successful seaborne crusading ventures after 1099.
