Venetian Crusade
Also known as Venetian expedition to Tyre
A Venetian naval crusade whose decisive achievement was the capture of Tyre, completing Frankish control of the southern Levantine coast.
The Venetian Crusade was launched by the Republic of Venice under Doge Domenico Michiel. Its fleet fought first in the Aegean and then sailed to the Holy Land, where naval power was the one thing the landlocked Frankish barons could not provide for themselves.
The expedition's great achievement was the siege and capture of Tyre in 1124. In return Venice received extensive commercial privileges through the Pactum Warmundi. Strategically, Tyre's fall completed a chain of major Frankish ports from Antioch's sphere down toward Ascalon and marked one of the high points of the Kingdom of Jerusalem's territorial expansion.
