Crusade of 1129

Baldwin II's western-supported campaign against Damascus, conceived as a major offensive but ruined by weather, supply problems, and poor coordination.

The Crusade of 1129 grew out of King Baldwin II's attempt to use western reinforcements for a decisive strike against Damascus. The city was not yet part of a unified anti-Frankish front, and taking it would have transformed the strategic balance between the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Muslim Syria.

The campaign failed before Damascus could be seriously reduced. Rain, mud, lack of supplies, and disputes over plunder broke the advance, and the Franks withdrew without achieving their objective. The episode foreshadowed the still more famous failure of the Second Crusade before Damascus two decades later.
