Lord Edward's Crusade

Also known as Ninth Crusade

Crusades 1271–1272
Lord Edward's Crusade

Edward of England's small expedition to Acre, often treated as the Ninth Crusade and the last crusade to reach the Holy Land.

Lord Edward's Crusade was led by Edward, heir to the English throne and later Edward I. Arriving at Acre in 1271 after the Eighth Crusade had collapsed at Tunis, he found a coastal kingdom under severe pressure from the Mamluk sultan Baybars and too weak to mount a major offensive.

Edward's force was small, but he carried out raids, sought Mongol coordination against the Mamluks, and helped negotiate a truce that gave Acre a short breathing space. He survived an assassination attempt before returning west in 1272. The expedition did not reverse the Mamluk advance, but it was the last crusade to reach the Holy Land before the final fall of Acre in 1291.
