Eighth Crusade

Also known as Crusade of Louis IX against Tunis

Crusades 1270
Eighth Crusade

Louis IX's second crusade, aimed at Tunis rather than the Levant and ended by the king's death from disease before it could affect the Holy Land.

The Eighth Crusade was Louis IX's second crusading expedition. Rather than sailing directly to Acre or Egypt, Louis turned first against Tunis, probably hoping to pressure North Africa, secure Mediterranean strategy, and perhaps convert or ally with the Hafsid ruler before moving farther east.

The plan collapsed almost immediately. Disease devastated the camp, and Louis died outside Tunis in August 1270. The expedition ended without reaching the Holy Land. Its main importance for the Latin East was what it failed to do: it consumed the last great Capetian crusading effort while the Mamluk sultan Baybars was steadily dismantling the remaining Frankish strongholds in Syria and Palestine.
