Great Mosque of Gaza (Crusader Church)

Originally a Byzantine church of St John converted to a mosque in early Islamic times and re-converted to a Crusader church in 1150 under the Templars. After Saladin's victory in 1187 the building reverted to a mosque — the Great Mosque of Gaza — but the Templars' Romanesque nave, pointed arches and handsome western portal remained intact and are still clearly visible today as an architectural palimpsest at the heart of the old city.
