Banias (Belinas)

Banias — Belinas to the Franks — lies at the foot of Mount Hermon where one of the main sources of the Jordan emerges. A strategically vital frontier town, it changed hands several times in the twelfth century between the kingdom and Damascus before being finally lost in 1164. Walls, gates and the base of a small castle survive in the archaeological park, alongside earlier Roman and Hellenistic remains.
